1. Just say no.

Right now, before you do anything else, remove every single credit card from the wallets of both you and your spouse. That includes Visas, MasterCards, Optimas, gasoline cards, and store cards. If you have pay-as-you-go charge cards, like American Express or Diners Club, keep one in your wallets (see chapter 19). If you’ve Visa-or MasterCard-branded debit cards that automatically deduct purchases from your checking account, you can hold on to one as well. They’re good for emergency use in those places that may not take American Express or Diners Club (see chapter 23). Put the rest of your cards somewhere safe yet inconvenient: a fireproof box where you store your insurance policies; a safe-deposit box at the bank; or maybe the box in the basement where you keep old tax records. From this moment on you’re going to just say no to credit and “pay cash” for everything you buy.
